Abnormalities in protein function or structure eventually cause human diseases. It is necessary to carry out biochemical experiments that are fine-tuned to the distinct properties of each protein to understand the function and structure of proteins. We use various methods, including structural biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, genetics, molecular biology, and computational chemistry, to identify rational therapeutic target molecules and investigate their functions and failures in diseases. Our ultimate goal is to create new treatments by fully using them. Recent research topic is that we identify a critical inhibitory site in an energy-producing enzyme, which can lead to rational design of antibiotics. We succeeded in identifying an antibiotic, which is effective against a super drug-resistant strain of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. (published in Nat commun.
