Each aims to cultivate the abilities and academic knowledge required to engage in professional research and education in that field. Over the more than fifty-year history of the Program, many of our graduates have gone on to become researchers in English literature and English studies, or specialists in English education. The master’s degree program offers courses in English literature (fiction, poetry, drama, film, culture, and critical theory) and English linguistics (syntax, phonetics, semantics, language acquisition, and English language pedagogy). The doctoral degree program provides research guidance for writing a doctoral dissertation in English literature or English linguistics, and also enrolls students from other universities and working adults. Students can also take courses designed for other majors within the Graduate School of Arts and Letters at Meiji Gakuin University, allowing them to pursue research with a broad perspective while remaining in the Graduate Program in English Literature.
